Want Your Productivity To Take Off? Learn How To Crush Your Goals
You are frustrated.
Because you have read A LOT of time management tips.
Heck, you have even taken several courses…
But you can`t seem to have become ANY more productive.
It all feels like a total waste of your TIME…
…and MONEY.
What`s even worse…
is that you feel like you have FAILED.
Sounds familiar?
No worries, I`ve been there too.
Relax. I got your back.
Let me introduce you to…
How Crushing Your Goals Will Make Your Productivity Take Off
Many people think that becoming more productive is about freeing up more time in your schedule and life.
They couldn`t be more WRONG.
If you were to free up 5 more hours per week and spent the time on watching low rated sitcoms on Netflix, it wouldn`t make you any more productive, right?
Of course NOT!
Yeah, you saved a few hours, but you just pulled it down the drain.
What if you were able to free up 5 more hours per week and spent the time on working on your most income generating tasks?
THAT would make you more productive.
FREEING up more time in your schedule is just the FIRST step when it comes to becoming more productive.
The second step is HOW you spend YOUR TIME.
You might be thinking, “Okay, Tor. I get that productivity is all about how I spend my time, but how does crushing your goals fit into this?”
Great question, indeed.
Measuring your productivity consists of 2 factors.
Time spent and goals accomplished.
I have created my own formula on this:
Productivity = Time x Goals
There is basically only TWO ways to increase your productivity.
You can either reduce the amount of time you spend on accomplishing your goals (read: tasks).
Or you can increase the amount of goals (tasks) you accomplish during the same period of time.
Example: You were to paint the walls inside a house and all the walls had the same height and width.
If you were to work at a normal pace, you were able to paint 4 walls (a room) in 2 hours.
How could you then increase your productivity?
You could either REDUCE the time you spent on accomplishing the same goal.
If you were to paint 4 walls in 1 hour, you would have become twice as productive, right?
You could also INCREASE the amount of goals (tasks) accomplished.
If you were to paint 8 walls in 2 hours, you would also have become twice as productive.
In this article, we will cover how to actually crush your goals.
If you ONLY focus on accomplishing your most important tasks in the fastest way possible, you will instantly become more productive.
When I was working as a SAP system administrator for one of the biggest companies in Norway, I managed to increase my productivity with 200%.
It means that I was able to complete in 2 hours what I normally spent 8 hours on doing.
And I did it by focusing on achieving my most important goals as FAST as I could, every single day.
Let`s take a closer look at…
The Recipe
To be quite honest, the recipe on how to achieve your goals is quite simple.
Note:Simple, not easy.
It basically consists of 4 steps:
Step 1 – Find out what you want
Step 2 – Find your WHY
Step 3 – Find out what you need to sacrifice
Step 4 – Decide
Let`s dive deeper.
Step 1 – Find out what you want
You need to have clarity and know EXACTLY what you want to accomplish within a DEADLINE.
You can`t say that you want to complete some reports sometime in the future. That won`t get done.
You have to be more specific.
If you were to say that you were going to complete 4 financial reports sometime in the future, you are still missing one ingredient.
What are you missing?
If you said deadline, a high five to you *SLAP*
The experts say that a goal without a deadline is just a dream.
When I`m working with my clients, I am always telling them the importance of having a specific deadline. If you don`t have a deadline on your tasks, you will procrastinate, and most likely the tasks won`t get done…
AT ALL.
So if you were to say that you were going to complete 4 financial reports within 2 weeks, you are ON TRACK.
If the goal is big, you should break it down into smaller manageable activities.
Step 2 – Find your why
Writing down a specific goal with a deadline is the easy part.
In order to achieve your goal, you most likely need to go outside your comfort zone and complete activities that you don`t really want to do.
Want to know the funny part?
The bigger your goal is, the more you have to push yourself outside your comfort zone and the more challenging the tasks are.
There is some universal balance between the effort you need to put in and the reward at the end.
If your why isn`t strong enough, you will most likely NOT complete all the necessary tasks.
Remember the 4 financial reports you had to complete in 2 weeks in the previous step?
If there was no REAL consequence to whether you completed the reports or not, you wouldn`t have a STRONG reason (read: a strong why) to get it done.
We humans are being motivated by the avoidance of pain or the pursuit of pleasure.
However, if you didn`t get those reports done within the deadline, you would get FIRED. THAT kind of gave you a strong WHY to complete the reports, right?
Yup, that was the avoidance of pain motivation.
On the other hand, if you were to be given a $5000 bonus for completing the reports within the deadline, that would also give you strong WHY, right?
The pursuit if pleasure works as well.
When it comes to our daily goals / tasks, we often don`t have someone who is going to punish or reward us based on the outcome.
That is why we have to find our STRONG WHY.
Accomplishing your 4 financial reports might not be something that motivates you.
But what if your main goal was to get a promotion at the end of the year?
Which meant that you would get a bump in raise and take your family on the vacation you all had been dreaming of.
THAT would motivate you right?
You get the point.
The stronger your why, the higher is the chance that you will actually complete the necessary tasks in order to reach your big goal.
Step 3 – Find out what you need to sacrifice
Everything has a price.
Every goal you are pursuing, will have it`s sacrifice.
When you are deciding to do a new activity, you are automatically saying no to other activities.
Why?
Because we only have 24 hours in our day, and hey! You need to sleep, eat and spend time with your family.
So, if you are going to finish those 4 financial reports within 2 weeks in order to get the promotion at the end of the year, and THEN take your family on the vacation of your dreams…
you have to SACRIFICE.
It will probably include:
- Spending long hours at work
- Skipping family dinners
- Skipping playtime with your kids
- Not being able to help your friend or family member with a certain task
The question is…
Are you willing to make the sacrifice in order to reach your goals?
Because whether you see it or not, everything has a price.
The bigger the reward, the bigger is the sacrifice.
The stronger your why is, the bigger is the sacrifice you are willing to make.
Step 4 – Decide
You have gone through all the steps above, and you have now come to the inevitable situation…
it`s time to DECIDE.
You have to put on your big boy or girl pants and make a decision.
You have to decide whether you want to make the sacrifice or not.
But here is a secret.
*Pssst* Don`t tell anyone.
IF you DECIDE to go through with the goal, you HAVE to stay on track and have the self-discipline to follow through, whether you FEEL like it or not.
That is how you are building your character, self-discipline and heading towards a successful future…
and last, but not least…
crushing your goals WILL make your productivity TAKE OFF!
If I can do it, then SO can YOU.
What To Do Next…
Now you have the recipe on how to become more productive by crushing your goals.
That being said, regardless of how good the recipe is, it`s totally USELESS if you don`t APPLY it.
Want to become more productive?
Start to insert some massive action and learn to crush your goals.
You can do it!
What is your experience with reaching your goals?

Hey Mark, hey Tor,
This is a great post.
These steps could be overwhelming, as I sometimes find myself working long hours, eventually tiring myself up, and think “Where is this even going?” kind of thing.
Step 1 is so easy to do. 2 to 4, could be real difficult.
I needed to read this. Or perhaps just need a cup of coffee.
Thanks.

Thanks for your comment, Nathan.
Yes, finding your why and to decide whether you really want to make the sacrifice…
IS hard work.
The people who say otherwise either don`t know what they are talking about or they are lying ;)
Goals really worth achieving usually have a high price tag on it.
In my free course, I am going through how to find your why and how to systematically plan and then crush your goals.
I think it might be helpful for you :)
Have a great day!
Tor

The sacrifice part is where I see a lot of people struggle. It’s hard to give up the short term gratification for long term success.
Having to give up late night Netflix binges in order to get a better sleep.
Not eating like an arsehole when out with friends.
And so on.
Engineer says
Based on how you explain the concept the equation should be Productivity = Goals/Time
Also, if you increase your productivity 200% you’d accomplish in 4 hours what you normally do in 8 (above you say that you could do it in 2 which would be a 400% increase)
Sincerely,
An engineer
