I am posting this note from the road. My wife is driving and I’m busy answering emails and arranging work with collegues from my laptop. The thing that makes this possible is a Sprint EVDO card. From a productivity standpoint, it is well worth the $60 per month. It more than pays for itself if I’m able to squeeze in an extra 30 minutes of work each month.

The Sprint EVDO device works great to provide internet access to the computer it is attached to… many roadwarriors find it useful to share the EVDO connection with multiple WiFi-enabled devices using the Cradlepoint PHS300 EVDO router: http://www.EVDOinfo.com/phs300

So the amount of work you can do connected in 30 minutes is significantly more than what you can do with reply+send when re-connected? Everything is cloud-based? The phone wouldn’t work for any of this?
Interesting work-style.
I actually like commuting as my brain goes “ahhh, can’t work. can relax.”

@Logan – Yes. If I’m just answering email, I can even do that on my Blackberry. But if I get a call saying that there is a problem with a client’s ERP system, I have to have internet access to get in and check it out.
The types of tasks that I can do offline are the non-emergency type stuff, but I was able to do that before getting the EVDO card.
