I’ve recently started trying out the Back to my Mac feature of Leopard that works with a .mac account. It didn’t work at all until I installed 10.5.3, but now I’ve been pleasantly surprised. In a nutshell it lets you access computers as if they were on your local network–even if one computer is at your house and the other is at Starbucks. It makes it easy to look over the shoulder of my assistant if she needs help with something or quickly transfer a file.
I just purchased a .Mac account (in anticipation of getting an iPhone!!) and haven’t had the chance to try Back to my Mac yet. Out of curiosity (and admitted ignorance on this topic), do you know if it’s possible to connect using Back to my Mac from a PC? I know you can do this with standard VNC and Remote Desktop programs, but it seems a shame to set something else up if I have already plunked down the $$$ for .Mac (er, mobileMe). Thanks!!
As far as I know the tricky networking it uses to connect back to your Mac will not work under anything but OS X. Does anyone else know of a way to do it with Windows?
You can probably get it to work using VNC if you know your ip address or use some type of dynamic name service like http://www.no-ip.com.
I was afraid of that. Since I’m guessing someone will bring this up, I am aware that there are other options. I specifically wanted to use Back to My Mac.
For those who are interested, there is a service called logmein that has a free version that supports Win/Mac, so I bet this will work (https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/). Also, Lifehacker had a post on how to “fake” Back to My Mac using VNC (http://lifehacker.com/365673/get-back-to-your-mac-without-paying-for-it). I haven’t tried these, so YMMV.
